<div class="tree_txt_unlinked"><p>Hominoids
are taxonomically less diverse than cercopithecoids. The earliest
fossils were found in late Oligocene and early Miocene deposits in East
Africa, with most hominoids extinct in the late Miocene. Hominoids
exhibit all catarrhine characteristics, but are distinguished from Old
World monkeys by a broader nasal region and palate, and larger brains.
Hominoids have rounded cusps, large hypocones on upper molars, and a "Y"
pattern on lower molars. Compared to Old World monkeys, hominoids have
relatively long arms with short elbows (olecranon process). They have
broad thoraces, a relatively short lumbar region, a broad ilium, broad
femoral condyles and a robust hallux.</p>
